But during my iPhone 14 Pro Max hands-on, I was most interested in the new Dynamic Island feature, Apple's replacement for the notch. This pill-shaped cutout changes based on your actions, showing everything from background music to countdowns.

I had a chance to spend a little time with the iPhone 14 Pro Max at Apple's event in September, and I was also impressed by its new camera, especially its low-light capabilities and new video action mode.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max looks different from the iPhone models released since 2017, as it ditches the notch in favor of the new Dynamic Island. This pill-shaped cutout takes up less space and provides alerts, notifications, and events.

For example, when I start a song in Apple Music and then go back to the home screen, I see a small playback window with album art and track information. If you long press on the dynamic island, you will see a popup with more information.

If you then start the timer, you'll see it added to the dynamic island on the right, so you get a lot of information in a small space. Even better, Apple is working with developers to take advantage of this feature, so you can check your workout scores or the status of your Lyft ride in real time.
